What the sticker price leaves out
A doll is one of the few consumer purchases where the advertised number is reliably the smaller half of the decision. Five categories of cost sit behind it, and none of them appear on the product page.
Import charges
These moved sharply in 2025 and 2026 and most buying guides have not caught up. The US $800 duty-free allowance was suspended in August 2025 and the suspension made indefinite for non-postal shipments in June 2026, so a doll shipped to a US buyer is dutiable at any value and needs a customs entry. Germany abolished its €150 threshold in July 2026. EU and UK buyers pay import VAT of roughly 19–20% collected before release. The calculator models a fixed entry and brokerage fee for the US rather than a duty percentage, because the tariff classification for full-size dolls is genuinely unsettled and any specific rate you read is a guess presented as a fact. Factory add-ons
Standing feet, an upgraded skeleton, implanted hair, an extra head, a gel or hollow bust. Individually modest, collectively a few hundred dollars, and chosen at the configuration step after you have already decided to buy — which is precisely when budgets stop being examined.
Care supplies, year one
Roughly $140 for TPE (cleaner, renewal powder, mineral oil and a repair kit) or about $60 for silicone, which needs no oiling. This is recurring, not one-off. The care guide lists exactly what the routine consumes — and which of it is ordinary cornstarch sold at a markup.
Storage
The line people forget entirely. A standard closet rod bends under full-size doll weight, so a hanging kit means a heavy-duty rod or a freestanding rack. Under-bed boxes run around $30, a proper closet setup around $120, a dedicated flight case or storage sofa several hundred. Torsos need a drawer and essentially nothing else.
Repairs
TPE tears at stress points and stains from dark clothing dye. A $15 solvent-glue kit handles most minor damage, and having one before you need it is the difference between a repair and a ruined doll. Silicone is far more resistant but harder to repair invisibly when it does go wrong.
How these estimates are built
They are conservative editorial figures, not vendor quotes, and they are deliberately transparent: the calculator adds your sticker price and add-ons, applies either 20% import VAT (EU/UK) or a flat customs entry and brokerage estimate (US), then adds a care figure set by material, a storage figure you choose, and a repair reserve for TPE. Nothing is hidden in a black box, and nothing is inflated to make an upsell look reasonable.
Two things it cannot model. Duty rates outside the EU/UK/US vary too much to estimate honestly, so "elsewhere" adds nothing and says so. And it cannot know whether your vendor quotes DDP (duties already paid) or DDU (you settle on arrival) — that single question changes the answer more than anything on this page, so ask it before you pay.
What people do with the number
Most commonly, they drop a size class rather than a vendor tier. That is the right instinct: the honest response to a total that has grown 20% is a smaller doll from a vetted shop, never the same doll from a cheaper one. A price far below the normal range is not a saving — in this category it is the clearest counterfeit signal there is.
