The first-time buyer playbook

Seven steps, in the order that prevents regret. Most buyers do them backwards — they fall for a face first, then discover the weight, the cost, and the counterfeit problem too late.

1. Start with weight, not looks. A full-size doll is 55–100+ lb of limp dead weight you'll lift, pose, carry to clean, and store — regularly. Test yourself honestly: carry something of that weight up your stairs. Can't or won't? A torso (5–30 lb) or compact build (50–60 lb) is your answer, and there's no shame in it — it's the single most-repeated advice from experienced owners to first-timers.
2. Set the all-in budget, not the sticker budget. Add ~15–25% for add-ons, care supplies, storage, and (EU/UK) import VAT. The True Cost Calculator does this in 30 seconds. If the honest total breaks your budget, drop a size class — not a vendor tier. Never chase a "70% off" price to make the math work: that discount is the scam.
3. Choose material with self-honesty. One question decides it: will you really do a monthly maintenance routine? Yes → TPE (softer, cheaper). No → silicone (easier, durable) or wait until you can afford it. Full logic in the TPE vs silicone guide.
4. Pick the doll from a verified factory brand. Established factories (WM, Irontech, Zelex, Starpery, Piper, FunWest…) publish official catalogs and run anti-counterfeit checks. Made-to-order is normal — expect 2–8 weeks including production and shipping. "In stock, ships today" at factory prices is usually drop-shipping fiction.
5. Vet the vendor before the doll. Run the 10-point Scam-Check. Non-negotiables: buyer-protected payment (PayPal/credit card), verifiable brand authorization, and a written factory-photo policy. Our vetted picks pre-filter this for you.
6. The factory-photo rule (never skip). Before dispatch, the vendor must send photos of your actual doll — face, body, skin tone, options — and ship only after you approve. This one habit prevents the #1 complaint in the entire industry: "the doll that arrived looks nothing like the pictures." Compare photos against your order sheet carefully; approving is your last easy exit.
7. Arrival day: verify before you celebrate. Film the unboxing (evidence if anything's wrong). Check for shipping damage, verify the factory's authenticity code if the brand has one (e.g. WM's scratch card), and confirm options match your order. Problems? Document immediately and contact the vendor in writing — your PayPal dispute window (180 days) and card chargeback rights are your real leverage, and never trade a positive review for a fix.
